Did you know that just within the past 24 hours, 124,207 new domain names were registered? That's a lot of new neighbors isn't it? With the number of websites on the Internet skyrocketing its easy to feel like your website is getting lost in the shuffle.

With so much business now originating from online searches, being one of the top listings online can be the difference between making a sale or losing it to someone else. Just think back to your last online search you did. Did you go past page one of the results? Probably not. Chances are your potential customers didn't either. To stay competitive online, business owners are increasingly turning to something called search engine optimization, or SEO for short.

Quality search engine optimization always focuses on two angles. The most important is designing your site to be attractive and helpful to the people you want as customers. What good is a website that ranks well in the searches but doesn't appeal to the people your targeting? Your site has to make people want to explore, dig-in, move beyond your homepage, and then come back for more.

The second angle involves making sure that your website has the technical components that search engines are looking for. Search engines are like people. They have likes and dislikes, things that attract them and things that turn them off. A good search engine optimization strategy maximizes your website's positive points while attempting to minimize or eliminate the negatives. A happy search engine equals better rankings for your website. When you make the search engines smile, they make you smile.

So are you ready to get started? Here is a short but powerful SEO" to-do'" list that can help your site begin moving up the ranks.

#1 - Make sure you do your research! Before anything positive can happen you need to figure out which keywords you need to be strategically placing throughout your website. The kingpin of keyword research, WordTracker, recently released a free version of their keyword research tool. Find this nifty tool all ready to go here (

Begin this phase by writing down ten to fifteen keywords you believe your customers would search for in your area(s) of business. Then use WordTracker to see how popular they are in terms of how many time people searched for that term. You'll notice that WordTracker's results suggest popular related terms too. You may stumble across a few search terms you hadn't thought of. Narrow down your final list of keywords to around five or so based on which search terms had the highest number of daily searches.
Now, armed with your keyword list, consider how to work these keywords into the titles and text of your website. Use them as frequently as possible. But don't go overboard - your first priority is to build a site that appeals to human visitors.

#2 - Start building links to your site. Search engines are democratic by nature. They view links coming from other sites to yours as votes. The more votes your website has, the more seriously they'll take you. In a search engine's way of thinking, lots of "votes" (i.e. incoming links) for your site must mean that lots of people think your site valuable.
Ideally you want the websites that are linking to yours to be related to your industry in some way. The more relevant the linking sites are to yours the better. Asking your vendors or business associates to link to your site is a good place to start.
However, at the end of the day, all links have some value, so don't be too picky about who links to your site. Petitioning family and friends for links from their sites or leaving links on blog posts or message boards all have some benefit. Do a little each day, but stay consistent and your link-building efforts will start paying off.

#3 - Don't forget to sign up for your local listing account. Its amazing how many business owners neglect this opportunity! Google, Yahoo, and now Microsoft's new search engine Bing all offer you the opportunity to sign up for a free business local listing.
In recent years the major search engines have really increased their ability to identify and return local listing results for people searching locally. When a search engine receives a search query that either contains the name of a town or city or can successfully identify the location of the computer doing to the searching it will return a list of local businesses before the regular search results.
Appearing first just because you're close to the center of a searchers' city or town can be a huge benefit. So why aren't you logging on right now to create your local business listing? The URLs you'll need are listed below.

There's so much more to any website's successful search engine optimization campaign than could be listed in any one "how to" article. The steps above provide a solid place to get started. But don't stop there. Whether you decide to hire a professional or try to do it on your own, make developing a strong online presence a priority for your business.

SEO 101: On-Page Vs. Off-Page SEO  Reply with quote  

A big part of every client relationship we have at Pan Galactic centers around education. Search Engine Optimization is intangible, highly technical, and just downright confusing to many people. Our 101 posts are a response to this situation. Whenever we get enough questions coming through the door on a topic, out comes a blog post!

In general there are two areas of SEO: On-Page and Off-Page. When we refer to a “page”, we are of course talking about your site. This is why some SEOs call it On-Site and Off-Site.

On-Site SEO

These are all the areas you can optimize on each individual page of your site. Essentially we are talking about Content, Code, and Site Architecture.

Content is the easiest to discuss since we are all familiar with a site’s content. For this instance, we are really referring to the text that you read on each page. Is the content high quality? Is it well written? Is it engaging to readers? Is content making use of keywords that you want to rank for in a search engine?

Be careful not to stuff the content full of keywords. A simple test is to read your content out loud. Does it sound like your trying to rank for a specific keyword? If it does rewrite it.

Some HTML code on each page of your site can be optimized around your chosen keywords. Specifically, we’re talking about Titles, Image Alt tags, and Headers. Like the content of you site, be very careful not to keyword stuff these areas.

Last but not least is the architecture of your site. Can search engines easily access your site? Make sure that your URLs incorporate important keywords that relate directly to the content on the page, and that your page’s aren’t slow to load.

Off-Page SEO

In general, one has less control over these items, but there are many indications that these are even more heavily weighted by search engines than on-page optimizations.

Links to your site from other sites are important parts of off-page SEO. You want links from quality websites. In a way, Links are like votes for your website. Having lots of links from many different sites is good. It goes without saying, that you should never buy links. The most recent Google updates no longer see bought links as providing a trustworthy vote for your website.

While the verdict is still out on how much social shares contribute to ranking, they are definitely an avenue for getting your site out there in front of people. They can contribute to acquiring more links, which is always a good thing.

All of these are great starting points for anyone to learn more about SEO, or to at least understand some basic terminology when talking to the SEO geek in your life.
