What's the deal with SEMPO?  Reply with quote

Ok, so the SEMPO, the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization, has a decent website, some big name sponsors, and if you join at the "Circle Level" for only $5000 a year you can get a front page link from their PR7 website. I've read their mission on the About page, quoted below, but what are they actually providing members?

quote:

The Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO) was formed to help spread the good news about search engine marketing (SEM).

SEMPO exists to fill the gaps in awareness and understanding of SEM, including educating marketing managers worldwide about what SEM is and how properly implemented SEM programs can provide some of the highest returns on investment possible in the marketing world today.

The industry is still in the early stages of using SEM as a new way of demand generation for products, services, and information. The time is ripe for SEMPO. Companies of all sizes have Internet marketing managers that use techniques like banner ads, yet many don't know what SEM is, or are unaware of real-life use cases that demonstrate some amazing ROI.

As a new member of SEMPO, I am yet to have a full opinion on what they do and don't do for there members, but so far I feel confident on the mission and overall experience being a member should bring.

A few reasons I joined...

1 - I have such an interest in search engine marketing as a whole, that I wish to have as much involvment as possible in anything seo related.

2 - I feel that SEMPO has a strong hold on the search marketing atmosphere and industry, so becoming a member could only bring good.

3 - To establish my company as a "serious about search" company and won't let a fee stand between being a member of an organized group of search professionals.

What has SEMPO done for me personally?

1 - Provided a link in the directory of search companies.

2 - Given me access to jobs wanted and position postings.

3 - allowed me to display there logo on my website as a member.

Sounds like a self selecting club.

I'll give you a link from a PR 7 page for a lot less than $5,000.

You can join at lower membership levels than the $5K/ yr SEMPO Corporate 'Circle". SEMPO General Corporate membership is $1,000/ yr; and SEMPO Individual membership is $299/ year.

Even $299 seems a bit steep. What do you get for that?

If you want to buy text links, http://www.direct-link-ads.com/ is the way to go.

Quote from their website:

SEMPO is an industry organization designed to promote search engine marketing in general, not an accreditation body for SEM firms. Membership in SEMPO is not a guarantee of a particular firm's capabilities, nor does it signify industry approval or disapproval of their practices.

from the join page it was a bit confusing to myself on what actually was given out of the $300 membership. anyways my 2cents worth

SEO is a hard way to make a living, I'd use the money for a BBB membership. I think that will get you more trust

Joining a bunch of local business groups for $5,000/year would get you a lot more links!
