Mod Rewrite 301 Redirect for Duplicate Site  Reply with quote

This rewrite trick comes from Michael Brandon/T2DMan (who also has a great VBulletin SEO guide) and is useful if you have two sites with identical URL structure on different domains, but you want to do a 301 redirect from one site to the other.

quote:

The following is great to redirect from an alternate domain into your proper domain. ie if you have got 5 domains and only one website, use this to redirect from those websites into the main website.

This will keep the benefit of the links into the duplicate domains and redirect into the exact same pathnames on the main website

.htaccess

code:

RewriteEngine On

RewriteRule (.*) http://www.newdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Why do you want to have two identical sites on different domains?

Yes, it's a nice trick if you're moving your site to a new domain (although I see little reason to do that once you establish your site). One thing to note: no page will be accessible on the site you setup this rule!

If you have planned to move your whole domain or sub-domain to a new domain or towards same domain of the website, always keep the back-up of your files and copy the old urls. So those urls can be redirected towards new urls in the htaccess otherwise you might loose ranking for ever for your current keywords.
