Mod rewrited my forums and....  Reply with quote

I never really saw any pickup in traffic from the SEs. Granted, these forums already were getting a ton of SE traffic, especially Google, so a small increase wouldn't have caught my attention any. I use only vBulletin, I think everything else is not worthwhile in comparison. I've always been told the urls with the ? aren't so SE friendly. So, I tried out the mod rewrite hack everyone uses on vBulletin. Nada.

One thing I've noticed between my forums that are rewrited and those that aren't, is that Google more quickly indexes the pages that have a .html extension.

SEO 1 was mod rewrited from the beginning just a few months ago, and has around 1,700 posts and has almost 10,000 pages indexed.

On the other hand, a site of mine that is several years old, in DMOZ, with similar PR (my estimate), and over 80,000 posts, only has about 15,000 pages indexed.

Seems that more traffic would be possible with more pages indexed, although I can't say it has doubled or anything like that with the forums I've tweaked mid-stride.

But you use phpBB, right? Obviously, the search engines have a far more difficult time with it than vBulletin.

There will be differences, but is it really "far more difficult" ?

Yea. Back when I upgraded my Coin Forum from phpBB to vBulletin the traffic from Google multipled by a factor of ten overnight. When I added the mod rewrite hack to it, there wasn't even a blip.

Do you know what the significant difference between them is?

If there is a good mod to be done, I'd like to know what it is.

If you want to get more traffic to your forum what I recommend you is doing mod_rewrite, but also do some seo to your pages, adding heading tags, optimizing the title, etc.
