TrustRank  Reply with quote

Very interesting paper about a method of using a combination of limited human site review and some clever math to deweight spam results in SERPs.

The idea is that a seed set of known good/non-spam pages, as rated by a human website analysis, is used in conjunction with linking patterns to try to determine the likelyhood of a given page or site being spam without requiring human review.

One rule that is utilized is that good pages often link to other good pages, but rarely link to bad pages, while bad pages will often link to other spam pages as well as good pages.

TrustRank could be considered quite similar to PageRank in nature, although in their analysis, TrustRank was much more successful at reducing spam from SERPs.

This is great! I hope that all the se's come to use this type of algorithm in the future, since it would stop all the newbies of spamming - (the advanced level spammers will still be around, tho)

You would think the ODP would be a good place to start but it's so hard to get listed even for good sites that I'm not sure many webmasters would be happy with it being used.

Hmmm, sounds like a good idea but the real question is how good a job you can do in coming up with a complete list of sites that carry out manual review. If not done properly, this can only lead to increasing the popularity of certain sites.

I couldn't agree more with this. It can give new sites an even harder time getting into the SERPs

ODP was good until it became full of crooked webmasters....Google will have to start their own directory behind the scenes, or manually set PR's for their favorite sites...

Yep TrustRank may well be the future.

Many people have noted a big drop in the number of indexed pages in Google after the recent update and believe that Google may have introduced some new filters based on the TrustRank of your IBL sources.

It means that IBLs from low ranking site wont cut much with Google in the future and 20-30 links from trusted sites are gonna carry much more weight than many, many links from low ranking sites (e.g. directories and the like).

SEO tactics will also have to change and having really good content / link baits is gonna become far more important.
