What do you do to become a good writer?  Reply with quote

I started submitting a couple of articles to article directories recently. I got my article approved and listed, but I can't really say that I'm a good writer. Do you do something to improve your writing? If so, what do you do?

To me the biggest problem is to come up with the up-to-date topic to write about. Once I get started, I seem to do OK.

I would recommend reading good articles from the people you have a high opinion of as writers. Analyse their use of titles, etc and make up your own style.

Sort the wheat from the chaff  Reply with quote

OHCnetwork,

think in a "sort the wheat from the chaff" frame of mind. So much stuff out there is just replication and stating the obvious. Be original and incisive.

A great way to become a good writer is to write everyday. It doesn't have to be a topic related to what you are selling or trying to get ranked for. Write about something you know a lot about. Write about what hobbies you have. Write about your take on the world.

Point is, you need to write everyday so that you can learn to describe things in way that people can understand and visualize. As soon as you do that, you can quit doing SEM for a living... Cool

Even if you're covering information that has been published before, if you can try and present the material in a different, more exciting way then this will help. Try and create a headline which draws the reader's attention and build up the interest from there.

If you have some extra cash, it might be worth it to take an online writing course from experts like Jill Whalen or Karen Thackston. You can get them both together or separately at http://www.highrankings.com/combo.htm. Alternatively, you can subscribe to their newsletters or blogs or get other writers to review your work and give you feedback. DigitalPoint has a copywriting forum that might be a good resource http://forums.digitalpoint.com/forumdisplay.php?f=86. I usually don't have time and I found a good guy who wrote a 250 word article for $5.

$5 for 250 words - care to share this guys name and an example article? Just out of interest, how do they write the article when you are probably the person who has the information you want them to write about. Do you submit a draft copy with the main points you would like them to get across and then they re-write it more eloquently?

You can see his writing samples here: http://talknokia.com/Writing/samples.html. The grammar isn't perfect but it's very close and I was happy with the article that I got.

You are right, the grammar is not that great but its content and that does count. I will try to get in touch with the guy and let you know. Would be good to have someone write a product review for 5 bucks.

Pick good article sites and write for them once a week at least. If admin likes you, your articles, names and links will be always on top with better pr and traffic.
