Link farming and link exchanges  Reply with quote

Hello,

What exactly is a difference between link exchange and link farming. Should link exchange sites such as linkmarket.net etc be categorized as link farms?

Thanks in advance

Building large ammount of links on cheap pages cam be as link farming.
So, linkmarket... it depends who you deal with. Try to find only quality websites.

It is a good article about link farms but it does not say anything about link exchanges.

No I would define link farms as the sites which let the every site submittted to them in the index so anything that isn't quality and lists bad quality or spamming sites is a link farm.

Exchanging links - is between 1 site to the other - so far, the best way to get quality links without paying for them.

Link farm - Pages with over 100 OBL (Out Bound Link) - can be considered as bad neighbourhood - a link from there will most likely not be considered at all! a link to that page from your website / page could get you penalized.

usually it is best to keep a 20 OBL / page limit.

well you can even use 20 links but the idea is to only accept quality links.

Ofcourse, that's why I wrote that linking to a bad place could get you penalized.

OBL - are also considered as part of your on-page optimization and linking to good quality websites can improve your ranking, just as linking to bad websites could make your ranking completely disappear.

I believe it can..... why do you think so many spammers bother to put a link to yahoo.com or to wikipedia or google.com - it doesn't benefit them traffic-wise.

Also, I believe that linking to quality websites show search engines that you have good content as you refer to other reliable sources in your pages - just like any good dictionary / encyclopedia (wiki) would do.

you have any prove that it doesn't?

well if it have been the case people have been just listing the top sites of the world like Google, Yahoo and etc and they won't need to optimize.

no, I wasn't saying that is the only factor in the algorithm - I'm just saying that I believe that if 2 sites had the exact same IBL & on-page optimization - if one of them added a link to a good quality website it could rank higher than the other.

I really wish I could come up with some hard evidence to show whether outbound links actually have any weight in the placement of your site in the search results. So far I've been far too busy/lazy to try any sort of double blind testing. Does anyone know of some actual hard data to support this one way or another?
