Ya but doing it yourself is a very hard work.

I think that's the way a lot of SEO's are going, if you look at people like Shoemoney and Andy Hagans they are probably making far more from passive income than most SEO's.

Yes you are right but they are much bigger and popular sites than the other ones.

i think the question is like how much should you charge for a meal at a restaurant or how much to pay an entertainer its all about how good they are at what they do and how much they think they should get paid.

I would love to find a company that pays salary for SEO! 3 years ago I grossed about $87,000 before taxes and that has been my best year!

I still dont think most businesses especially small to medium size ones see the benefit in SEO or search marketing as a whole.

Very timely thread for me :)

There is a chance that I may end my paid career as an professional IT project manager sometime this year. I have not been involved in the SEO industry professionally so far. But for the last 5 years or so I have done a lot of reading and experiments with my own sites.

I have not used any paid SEO tools or have not run extensive PPC campaigns.

I have also produced sites with PHP, MySql and HTML.

I am looking to either get a job for an SEO company or freelance but I need to have enough income to keep up with the mortgage payments.

What would be the recommendations from the SEO pros in this community.

What do you think I should read up on further or improve myself.

@justicewhite -

Your salary expectations will be set by where you live. Speaking only about the US market, I know on average, West Coast SEO's make more (California, Seattle) than Southwest SEO's (Texas, Florida). East Coast (New York, Boston) make the most, but they also have a high cost of living.

IMO, an "average" seo should make 35k - if you've been in the biz for a t least 3 years and can show top rankings for phrase in Google for any length of time over 6 months, that person should be making at least 70k.

...of course, if you freelance like I do, you can *easily* make twice that amount Cool

A lot depends on the company. If its a pub for example you wont get much. If its a company that produced work training videos for £1500 a pop that has a lot of competition and spends £12/click on adwords, then they are better of spending £300.000/year on SEO rather than £500.000 on ads.

The scale of the company the SEO guys work at can have an important role in the way salaries and the projects prices are going to be set. For instance, the top ten Google sites, having tens of staff workers are indeed going to charge more.

I've worked consultancy side, and inhouse seo, and I would never go back to consultancy, for myself or anyone else. I think if you are going to take the risk of going it alone you have to be a particular kind of person to make it work, and sometimes it's worth taking less money to have the budgets you need, the time, support and security too.

Generally I have seen entry level SEO jobs outside of london start about 16K going up to £40+K for experienced SEO advisors; having said that most of the SEO jobs in the UK are london based ;)

hi to all I am new member in this forum...

i have read in the article of one of the famous internet marketing expert that for a good seo "expert" (term looking confusing as there is so many debate on the expert word earlier) 85k $ is easily achievable................

:)

and if you used your talent properly then u can earn more of that...

basically there is no standard set for the earning for any field. it will depend on the person talent and expertise on that field....
