META Keywords-how many?  Reply with quote

About how many META keywords should you use? There are so many that relate to my business but I don't know how many is too many. Advice would be appreciated.

Well usually you could use roughly the same amount of characters as with your META DESCRIPTION, so around 200 characters.

There is no limit set and you would not get penalized, major search engines grab the amount of characters they wish to use.

safer, I bet you already have a pretty good idea about these topics. If not, maybe try searching this in G or G, you'll find a lot of discussions on the topic.

In a perfect world, you would use one keyword in the meta tag... Surprised

Keywords  Reply with quote

Safer,

do you mean how many keywords in the keywords meta tag? If so, its a question of what you use the tag for. I use it just as a copy discipline and use no more than 6-8.

I occasionally add in secret messages into my keywords tag - in case some nerdy person like most of us checks the source code.

Any benefit you get from this tag is marginal at best, but I suppose at the margin that might be considerable :)

Many websites do not even have keywords meta tags anymore and nothing happens to their rankings and traffic.

It is something not necessary anymore, I think, because search engines will look at links to say what websites are about and not by reading all of the keywords listed.

Just so you know, according to Danny Sullivan, Google does not look at keywords anymore.
Other SE do but not Google, Yahoo and MSN still use them.

Your best bet would be no more than 10 keywords per page.

This is about right, since the Rule of Thumb has always been around 100 characters.

Quite correct, in that Google has stated their move to de-emphasize KeyWords, but they have yet to find an effective (and fair) method of resolving how this new value system fits with the overall relevance metrics ..... thus, you should find a much more focused attention being given to the "Rules" of keyWords being complied with as a value itself (anchored, natural occurrance, etc.) in the attempt to include it into the "Build" evaluation.

And Jack's suggesed 10 words is right on, but I would further by reminding that it is essential to think in the vein of using naturally composed phrases rather than words, and having those phrases properly anchored.

Hmmm - my take on this is that given the low importance of the keywords meta tag in the major search engines, I would tend to stick to traditional usage...

1) Each page should have it's own individual Page Title and Description meta tag which reflects what is on that page.
2) The Keywords meta tag is slightly different traditionally and is an area where you can add terms that are relevant and similar that ARE NOT ON the page!
3) The Keywords meta tag should be kept as short as is practical, but should be very clear about the topic of the page.
4) It doesn't really matter all that much but never the less should be done well just as any other element of a site or page should be. All the little bits go to make up the whole and should be in balance as far as possible.

Title Tag  Reply with quote

Shawnhenry,

I agree with remarks about the title meta tag being unique for every page. I come across many websites in my work where I find the same title tag on every page. Some content management systems even make this the default.
