interesting point. As a marketer (forgetting the SEO part of my role) I would always prefer something that comes (almost) for free.
When it comes to PPC its very difficult to obtain any long term competitive advantage. Your keyword selection, your copy, your bids, your landing pages etc can only extract a small advantage over well organised rivals. SEO, on the other hand, still offer massive opportunity to make significant gains at very low relative cost.
