meta tags not helping?  Reply with quote

I have a statcounter account and when I get visiters through search results the search was always for words that appear in my text and never the meta tags i have planted in my html.

This makes me wonder:
- am i using the wrong meta tags?
-does this matter at all or should i just leave it alone?

Is this hurting my traffic flow?

you dont have any of your main keywords in your meta tags? is it targeted traffic or the visitors who find your site through your meta tags just stumble on it by accident? if not you can just change the meta tags.

" but search results from visitors match my text?"
you should see that from your stats counter that what it is for if it shows the reference of the visitors, if it doesn't i suggest you sign up with google webmaster tools or any other good program that shows you detailed stats of your visitors

i didn't say that meta tags don't matter at all, they helps push your keyword in SERP's but that doesn't mean you can rely on that alone.

Meta Tags  Reply with quote

Jason,

on their own meta tags are entirely passive. They only work if they are linked to text on the page. Think of your tags as a copy brief.

Keep meta data short and sweet, diffent engines look at the data slightly different like the length of the title tag. Be careful repeating words and the length of data as I feel this can dilude the value a bit.
